SANDSTONE - SOUTH EAST ENGLAND HIGH ROCKS 1 mile West of Tunbridge Wells This is the tough draw, hard climbing outcrop of the area, with some testing routes up to UK - 7a, and maybe harder. The rock formation here is very special indeed, with deep passage ways, small canyons, and flared off width cracks - smeared in green slime! There is just about something to test anyone here - no matter how good or experienced they are. SUB GRADES We give suffix's to 6a, 6a+ etc. in our guidebook, which should prove useful to a lot of visiting climbers, and enable them to pick out more amenable routes. There are not very many easy routes here - and not that many medium routes either. You need to be cranking 5c to get a lot out of this outcrop. WEDDINGS TOO The outcrop is owned by a small wedding pub opposite - whose owner Guiseppie, gets on pretty well with the local climbers, and has allowed them to clear a lot of undergrowth and therefore keep routes open and dry. The rocks stand nicely proud and give a charming outlook. PRIVATE LAND The pub charges and entry fee to the rocks that climbers must pay too. At present it is £5 for the day. Please use the toilets at the pub since the area is more of a garden than a wilderness. Photo: Nemesis 6b, High Rocks. |
