This book is the ultimate climbing guidebook for anyone who enjoys surfing, a holiday by the sea, lovely seafood, and a real assortment of climbing. Few areas in Europe are so varied as Portugal. It has the climate which really suits climbing. The book is a full topo guidebook with hundreds of colour photos, and is easy to use in any language.

CLIMBING FOR ALL GRADES

Variety is the name of the game for Portuguese climbing. In this book we cater for everyone, from bouldering up to sport climbing, and even suggest some trad style excursions in the south of the country. It's not a hugely impressive arena for climbing like the south of France, but then again - many people just want holiday climbing near the sea, and be able to enjoy reasonable climbing whilst being with friends who don't climb.

IDEAL LOCATION

The climbing areas form into different areas, but are mostly near the sea and can be combined with a good beach holiday. The blessing with Portugal, is that the wind blows and the sea is rough. This makes for changeable weather of course, but if it does rain - then it dries in an instant, and gives you a nice fresh feeling. When the Med turns cloudy, you get smooth inky water and bad humidity. Here on the west coast facing the Atlantic, the wind is nearly always fresh and lifts the spirit. If you have enjoyed climbing in Cornwall, then this is like a super warm Cornwall. The sea can be chilly, so a wet suit is adviseable for surfing.

CHECKED ACCURACY

We have got in there and checked nearly all the routes for this book, and with the help from a few slightly useful friends - see photos, can give you very accurate grades. You will find our grades very easy to use with the colour layout, and we give lots of little icons to help you choose the best cliff to visit for each day.

GETTING THERE

There are no shortage of budget flights to the Algarve in the south of Portugal. (Faro). You can get very reasonable scheduled flights to Lisbon, and car hire is pretty reasonable. Our book gives all the camping info etc.

COLOUR TOPOS

All of the topos are in full colour and include the latest in grahic design techniquies. This allows us to illustrate many parts of a cliff that would not be seen by a photo, and enhance the parts which climbers will look for when finding a particular route. All difficulties are colour coded in the same advancing colours as skiing & Fontainebleau. All icons used are explained in international languages
